Restaurant Grandpa (Bak Ku Teh) @ Paramount Garden PJ

Sunday, October 26, 2008

Bak Ku Teh (Hokkien: 肉骨茶) is a Chinese soup popularly served in Malaysia, Singapore and also cities of neighboring countries like Batam of Indonesian and Hat Yai of Thailand. The name literally translates as “meat bone tea”, and at its simplest, consists of meaty pork ribs in a complex broth of herbs and spices (including star anise, cinnamon, cloves, dang gui and garlic), boiled together with pork bones for hours. It is commonly eaten with rice. often served with strips of fried dough called you char kueh (or Youtiao in Mandarin). Dark soy sauce is used as a condiment, sometimes accompanied with chopped chilli padi. Tea is also usually served in the belief that it dilutes or dissolves the copious amounts of fat which are consumed in the eating of this dish. (Refer to Wikipedia). Klang, widely believed to be the home of bak kut teh, is famous for its many bak kut teh restaurants.

Grandpa located at the famous Paramount Garden, it is beside the Giant Supermarket. The soup was not very thick, but semi-strong in herbs flavor and there is not much MSG added (doesn’t feel the thirstiness after meal). The soup was a nice blend of herbs and savouriness (however, not the best one in Klang……..to be continue on next review) and the meat was just nice - firm and tender at the same time and still tasting fresh. They also serve yam rice (recommended as flavor is strong and rice is springy).

Generally, if you are lazy to go to Klang and you stay in PJ, Grandpa is not a bad place to visit.
