Vietnam Kitchen @ 1 Utama PJ

Wednesday, November 12, 2008

Vietnamese cuisine is known for its common use of fish sauce, soy sauce, rice, fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables. Vietnamese recipes use many vegetables, herbs and spices including lemongrass, lime and kaffir lime leaves.

If you are new to Vietnamese food, travel to 1 Utama and try the Vietnam Kitchen which located at 3rd Floor in the New Wing (near the GSC Cinema escalator). The ambiance of the restaurant is quite comfortable and a family oriented décor.
If you are not sure what to order, do try their Special beef noodle soup (nice), Vietnamese seafood salad, Vietnamese grilled chicken with preserved, Lemongrass Chicken Chop Rice (oklar, abit too dry), Minced Prawn on Sugar Cane (fresh and sweet prawns marinated and wrapped around the sugar cane, then deep fried to perfection and served with a special fish sauce, good to try) and Crispy Spring Onion Cake which looks like a doughnut topped with fish floss, mayonnaise and sesame seeds wrapped with vegetables (Delicious).
Finally, their special combination set of “Banh Hoi Thap Cam”, which is a DIY spring roll with rice paper, pork, chicken and vermicelli, fried spring rolls, minced shrimp on sugarcane and pork balls. This dish is a good introduction to this delicate cuisine. The rice paper is specially flown in from Vietnam, so expect a fragile texture. Served on a platter, matted by banana leaves, it comes with fish sauce and sweet sauce, both of which are used as dips (cater up to four people and can be an appetizer or a full course meal).
Additional note: the above is Mango Prawn Spring Roll, smell alright, quite aroma but taste quite weird as the texture of the mango is soft then fuse with deep fried prawn which is crispy. Some might say its unique and tasty but some might say this is totally wrong.

Generally, although their service is fast, the waiters/waitresses that were dashing around (clearing up tables or responding to a customer’s call) came across as quite a disturbance to the patrons.

If you have tried authentic Vietnamese cuisine in Melbourne/ Adelaide, you will find that this is just a milder version of the real Vietnamese food. It is worth a try though. Really quite good.
