Yi Xin Ge Restaurant (Bak Ku Teh) @ SS4D PJ

Monday, November 17, 2008

Yi Xin Ge has been in 'bak kut teh' business for the past 40 years. Currently, the business is being managed by the second generation of the Goh Family who founded this shop. For nearly half a century they have tried and tested different blends of ingredients to improve the taste of their 'bak kut teh'. Their signature style is to add dried oysters and ginseng root to the basic ingredients of this soup. The soup is clear and smells mildly of its herbal ingredients. The soup tastes fantastic. The meat is very chewy and tender. Yi Xin Ge has even prepacked its 'bak kut teh' ingredients in individual brown paper bags for sale. Customers can now 'duplicate' their favourite dish at home. Accompanying the signature dish, there are also choices of ‘Yar Char Kwai’, braised mushroom, Tau Fu Pok (deep fried tofu skin) and vegetable as sidedishes. While the restaurant is not air-conditioned, the interior is fairly cooling with numerous fans rotating on the ceiling. Also, the open concept (front of the shop is widely open) of the shop allows air to flow in. The restaurant is very spacious. It can fit more than 40 tables. Although the shop (restaurant) is quite old (but not shabby), it gave a sense of 70s/80s atmosphere feeling. Many of their customers remain seated at their tables for long period of time, sipping tea from tiny chinese teacups enjoying a chitchat or smoke with pals right after their meal.

For me, this is the place to go for 'bak kut teh' for now. At least the soup is not too oily and taste great.
