Thursday, April 9, 2009

You stay in Malaysia and you should know that Malaysians are well known for their love for food, whether its local, fusion or many other cuisines from around the world. So about 18 months ago, BBQ Chicken (No. 1 chain restaurant in Korea) opened their first outlet at Desa Sri Hartamas in Kuala Lumpur.

Go way back, this restaurant started in September 1995, and BBQ Chicken has grown to be the No. 1 franchise brand in Korea with more than 1,850 shops and was the first Franchise Company ever to be selected as Korea’s top 100 Brands. According to the fact, BBQ Chicken created Olive Luxury Chicken and was the first to use only 100% Extra Virgin Olive Oil imported from Spain (which is several times more expensive than other cooking oil) to fry chicken. Then according to them, they use only the best and freshest ingredients in their restaurant and consumers can be assured that they are served with quality chicken meal.

First stop, Chicken Tortilla, consists of golden chicken strips, tomatoes and lettuce wrapped in tortilla. Complete with golden fries and salad. This is a healthy dish and good for patrons that going for diet….lol… Anyway, the chicken is crispy and with tomatoes & lettuce, it gives patron a juicy delicious bite…

Second stop, the boneless grilled chicken serves with onion & vege fried rice and fresh vegetable. The chef uses boneless chicken leg grilled with Korean herbs sauce and taste great and the meat is juicy too.

Then the bad stop, their original chicken, marinated right through the meat with BBQ’s unique recipe and secret formula of 30 natural seasonings and cooked to golden perfection. Also complete with golden fries and coleslaw. By the way, if you look at the pictures below, you might find that one of the chickens looked something wrong, very wrong… The chicken on the left is not crispy at all with one glance, you know that the skin is soft and soggy, it’s like the chicken has dropped into the sink or something…yuck! Still, the waitress served it to the customer without considering what will happen next… for this reason, the customer complained to them and able to get a fresh one. Although BBQ Chicken emphasizes the quality and the assurance to the customer, the management has failed badly in these 2 areas.

Lastly, the Iced Chocolate and fresh orange juice….nothing special and nothing to complain here….

Overall, their menu is clearly differentiated by its taste and the chef done a good job but this visit is quite clear to patrons that their assurance is far from good.

Hihi, just to inform the patrons, and correct me if I’m wrong. Apparently the fried chicken with olive oil is not that healthy. People got the wrong perception of olive oil. yes it is healthy - only when it is not exposed to high heat. Olive oil cannot be used for cooking over high heat what more frying. The act of heating the oil will change its structure and thus making it more hazardous to consume than consuming normal fried chicken. That’s why olive oil are always bottled in green bottles to avoid direct contact with sunlight.

Hi Jack, yes, you're right that people don't usually use olive oil to deep fry items due to it's low smoking point, BBQ Chicken claims they have developed a special olive oil which has a higher smoking point. The olive oil used at this outlet is specially brought in from Korea. To enhance their food quality, they even have a Chicken University in Korea where they develop the food and train the franchise holders

Oh Man! When first opened, the fried chicken was the best yummy-licious I have ever eaten. Now, the quality has drop to a level that is not acceptable at all.
