Ang Kee Restaurant @ SS2, Petaling Jaya

Sunday, May 31, 2009

P1000441
Ang Kee Restaurant is situated at the SS2 Chow Yang area, same row as Kayu Nasi Kandar, a few shoplots away. Huge signboard that reads Restoran Ang Kee, you can't miss it. Obviously, the owner of this restaurant is also called Ang Kee, and has since operated in the early 90s.

For this particular visit, many patrons have recommended that here is famous for their Hokkien fried mee. Refer to this picture below, its Meehon+mee. The Hokkien Char is not bad actually; it has the usual pork meat, vege and also has pork lard. The lard is diced so small that you can't see it but you can still certainly bite into it. Furthermore, it has wok taste which is good and tangy.
P1000443
After that, it’s the Cantonese Hor Fun/Wa Tan Hor Fun, and so far it’s delicious with the usual ingredients however the chef put a bit too much of white pepper. A turn off to the patrons.

Upcoming Event : 1st Year Anniversary !

Friday, May 29, 2009

Its been 8 months & counting since this blog was established. Micheal established it as his food blogging sharing with everyone around the web & it has since garnered 26000+ visitors (Well, its an achievement to say the least). Most of the content here is contributed by Micheal & Cherry, 99% of the time (0.5% for my 1st food review which i don't think i have any talent in writing it at all, if any (minus the ranting on NYD, LOL) & 0.5% from Blur's food review). My role is much of a moderator-cum-complaint-ner-cum-sarcasm-mer.

In about 4 months time, this blog will reach its infancy "1st yr Anniversary" which Micheal will give a surprise. (No, he's not going to expose himself publicly). We have some idea's for the special day itself but i wont spill the beans. I wish to thanks Micheal & Cherry for having me & Vivian to tag along in your ever-adventurous food voyage (be it good or disastrous) and JH & Momg Yee for going to so many places to eat but never wrote one =P.

I have a feeling im going to be whacked in the comments. LOL. That's it for now until next time "if" i ever have the mood to write again.

Kopi Time Café @ Atria Shopping Centre, Petaling Jaya

Thursday, May 28, 2009

P1000674
This kopitiam (Kopi Time) has operated since 10 years ago (maybe). Once in this place, you will be able to smell the aroma of the local coffee as well as a tinge of toasted bread smell (which has enough butter and kaya). It’s a nice place for working people to have a nice cup of aroma coffee before going to work. This place has the standard modern kopitiam tables & chairs. Décor is also the usual.
P1000666
For a normal kopitiam, they do serve some interesting dishes, like Roti Bakar with Tuna Sambal, Curry Spaghetti Special (Dry Curry), Chicken & Udon Mee Soup and Tenggiri Fish Ball Mee Soup. Some are nice but some are just average only. As for the below is the Chicken Porridge, which actually taste quite good. It’s good for patrons that wanted to try something light.
P1000668
Next is their Nasi Lemak Kopi Time, the rice is in fact fragrance and with the usual coconut milk, maybe they also add oil to enhance the taste of the rice, yummy but oily… furthermore, the nasi lemak comes with a piece of rendang chicken drumstick and sambal squids. The chicken is tender and full of rendang and curry flavor and the sambal squids is bit spicy and the sambal is add as the sambal for the rice. Overall, it’s a nice, tangy nasi lemak. However, the prices here are at the high side.

(Breakfast) Alexis Bistro @ Bangsar Shopping Centre, Kuala Lumpur

Sunday, May 24, 2009

P1000283
This is the second post about Alexis Bistro and this time is about their breakfast set. Basically, patrons can choose between 2 types of breakfast sets, the Hearty breakfast set or the Wellness breakfast set. For the wellness set, basically they serve a healthy breakfast like bircher muesli with wheat germ & sunflower seeds, with fresh fruits with honey yogurt and Aesop herbal tea. Too bad, this round didn’t manage to try it but try doing it next time.

As for the Hearty set, patrons get to choose coffee/tea from their drink menu and furthermore, the set comes with a cup of freshly squeezed fruit juice.
P1000290
P1000291
This particular set serves with 2 fresh organic eggs with your choice of style (fried, scrambled, poached and sunny side), turkey ham or turkey sausages, baked beans, sautéed mushrooms, grilled tomato & toast. Of course, you can opt to add hash brown for an additional RM5.
P1000295
P1000296
Mostly the eggs are delightful, and then the turkey ham is quite nice and tangy, same comments about the turkey sausages (Yummy). Baked beans, the usual self, and no comment. Sautéed mushrooms are tasty and grilled tomato is over baked and juicy. Lastly the hash brown is crunchy and lip-smacking.
P1000298
P1000297
Generally, the breakfast set is reasonable priced and tasty. Definitely many patrons can enjoy their meals as well as the ambiance here.

Kik Kok @ Ikano Power Centre, Mutiara Damansara

Thursday, May 21, 2009

P1000424
Kik Kok, Kik Kok, Kik Kok……what is that? What is Kik Kok? Maybe a name, stall name, name of the food, who knows, no one knows except the owner. Basically they are selling thin waffle/pancake. It’s a thin, flat cake prepared from a batter and cooked on a hot griddle or frying pan. Pancakes exist in several variations in many different local cuisines.
P1000423
After some researching, it believes that Kik Kok is taking the Scottish crumpet which is made from the same ingredients as a Scottish pancake, and is about 180 mm (7 inches) diameter and 8 mm (0.3 inches) thick. They are available plain, or as a fruit crumpet with raisins baked in, and is not reheated before serving; condiments include jams. The ingredients include a raising agent, usually baking powder, and different proportions of eggs, flour and milk which create a thin batter.
P1000426
Here they serve with varieties of flavors like peanut butter, chocolate, pineapple, strawberry, blueberry, kaya, honey and butter. If patrons like more bites from pancake, they can always add banana or chicken floss.
P1000427
Overall, the thin waffle is crispy and tasty. Kids and even adults will love it. You can find it in Ikano, lower ground floor, at one of the small stalls (opposite the news-stand) just next to the escalator.

(Set Menu) Jaya Palace Restaurant @ Wisma LYL, Petaling Jaya

Monday, May 18, 2009

This is the second review on this restaurant and this particular post is about their set menu. As mentioned before, Jaya Palace Restaurant located in Sect.51A just right in the middle of industrial and office buildings. Basically, the restaurant is just along the Federal Highway and patrons can easily spot the restaurant just a few blocks away from Menara Axis. Menara LYL where it is located is not fully tenanted and it's not hard to miss the restaurant on the Ground Floor

Straight to the set menu, their chef designs a couple of sets menu specially for patrons who are really enjoy fine Chinese Cuisine. For this particular set, Dish 1 is Pan Fried Scallop & Stuffed Beancurd. The scallop is wrap with fresh fish paste and pan fried, giving a nice bouncy texture and quite fragrance. As for the stuffed beancurd (something like yong tau foo), it stuffed with fish paste, quite nice but required sweet sauce to accompany with it.
P1000144
Dish 2: Double Boiled Superior Sharkfins in Claypot. What to say about this….it’s fantastic, the taste is very nice and the soup is marvelous with A grade sharkfins with a Chinese mushroom. (Perfect!)
P1000138
P1000142
Dish 3: Deep Fried Crispy Hong Kong Pigeon. Some patrons may like pigeon, and some may not like it due to the fact that it is a pigeon (Peace). Anyway, it tastes like duck meat with softer texture. The pigeon is perfectly fried and accompany with sweet plum sauce, it is very tangy. Yummy
P1000149
Dish 4: Home Style Stuffed Sea Cucumber. The sea cucumber [also called Holothuroidea are a class of marine animals (phylum Echinodermata) with an elongated body and leathery skin, which is found on the sea floor worldwide. Many holothurian species and genera, informally known as sea cucumbers, are targeted for human consumption] is stuffed inside with fish and meat paste and then braised form sometime. The texture is nice and bouncy bite.
P1000146
Dish 5: Palace Roasted Pork with Rice & Egg. Roasted pork here is the best, lean and fatty pork meat [with perfect proportion, ration of 2(Lean):1(Fat)] specially chooses by the chef, and perfectly roasted till skin is crispy and golden color. Then accompany with steamed rice and half cook fried egg (with yolk flowing out) and garnished with spring onions and pork lard oil to pour onto the rice. Making this a nice dish…..thumbs up….and of course, very fattening..
P1000137
P1000151
P1000152
Dish 6: Mango Sago with Ice Cream. This dessert is very nice, with mini bite size mango and strawberry to accompany with the mango sago. It’s so tasty….heaven…
P1000155
No doubt this set menu is very nice and urges other patrons to try it.

Little Taiwan @ 1 Utama, Petaling Jaya

Sunday, May 17, 2009

Taiwanese cuisine itself is often associated with influences from the middle to the Southern provinces of China, the most notable being the province of Fujian (Hokkien). In 1949, when New China was established many cooks from its different provinces went over to Taiwan. This explains why many Taiwanese cooking which bear the influences from all over China can easily be found. Besides this, a notable Japanese influence also existed when Taiwan was under the Japanese rule. Today, Taiwanese food in principle is a combination of flavors of its own as well as those influenced by the Chinese and the Japanese.
P1000234
For this particular Taiwanese restaurant located at the lower ground of new wing, called the “Little Taiwan”, they serve halal Taiwanese cuisine based on the Malaysia Multi racial society that reformulating the original Taiwanese cuisine accordingly.

Let’s talk about the drinks first, clockwise from the picture below, Rose Tea (quite ok actually but somehow the quality of the rose is quite bad because it dissolve into the hot water quite fast), Jasmine Honey Tea (oklar, not too bad), Ying Yong Pearl Milk (yet, it’s not bad nor good, but ok ok saja), Hot Old Ginger Milk Tea (good), Crystal Magic Coffee (wonder why they called it a magic coffee, doesn’t taste nice and weird) and then Honeydew Milk Tea with Pearl (nice).
P1000089
For starters, the Taiwanese Special Chicken Sausages, taste wise……hhmmm…. a bit weird and texture wise is not very crunchy…must say that this dish is not very nice.
P1000093
Then Pan Fried Chicken Dumplings, hot and crispy, fresh out from the pan wok. And taste wise is so so saja…
P1000103
Braised Beef Noodle, is pretty a nice dish and the soup is nice and sweet. Good for patrons that love soupy stuff. Meat texture is also tender….
P1000098
Braised Beef Meat Ball Noodle, serve 2 huge beef meatball, a well known dish from Taiwan and it’s tangy, both meat and the soup..okoklar
P1000102
“Tang Tang” Noodle, the name of the dish suggesting that the noodle is very bouncy…. Apparently, they are just half right only, noodle is freshly made but not that bouncy..
P1000096
Point to note, this restaurant is named after Little Taiwan, is it because it's really serving purely original Taiwan food? Suggesting that the food served was nothing special about it and only see “Little” connection Taiwan cuisine. Mostly, taste wise falls under average.

Canton-i @ 1 Utama, Petaling Jaya

Wednesday, May 13, 2009

The origins of Hong Kong cuisine date back to the early colonial British rule when immigrants, mainly from the province of Canton, came in drove to the thriving city of Hong Kong to trade with the western merchants. Over generations, this exchange of goods and culture between the East and the West gave rise to new cultural identities, one of which we recognize today as contemporary Hong Kong cuisine. Reputed to be a “Gourmet Paradise”, it is the decorous consideration of the flavor, texture and presentation of each dish that has elevated Hong Kong’s cuisine to an art form and has propelled it into the ranks of other internationally acclaimed and prominent cuisines.
P1000180
In bringing the very best of Hong Kong cuisine to Malaysia, Canton-i has invited renowned chefs from Hong Kong and Guangzhou to prepare a wide variety of authentic dishes using the finest imported ingredients meticulously chosen to offer a true taste of Hong Kong. Canton-i is located on the ground floor of 1 Utama, just opposite TGI Friday's. Upon arrival, expect a long queue outside especially during weekend. Ordering food here is very much like any others “chan char teng”, you are given a piece of paper catalog on it, and tick down whatever you want to eat. Here the menu serves noodles, rice, congee, dim sum items (fried, pan fried and steamed) and desserts.

Hong Kong Style Milk Tea, their milk tea is actually nice but not that good…. There are better milk teas somewhere out there….
P1000200
All their wantan noodles are freshly made and in the menu, they provide a methodology of how to make it. So for the Japanese Stewed Pork Rib Wantan Noodle, the noodle is bouncy and you could taste the flavor of the fresh egg. As for the Stewed Pork Rib, it’s tender, sweet (because they used Japanese sauce) and quite tangy.
P1000199
Char Siew Wantan Noodle, noodle is the same…… the char siew is alright but somehow lack of something…..hhmmmmm
P1000202
Then the Congee with 3 combinations (deep fried pork intestine, 2 types of crackers), the congee is actually taste quite ok and mixture with the deep fried stuff, it gives a crunchy bite.
P1000203
Pan Fried Rice Flour Noodle (Chee Cheong Fun) with XO sauce, unique taste with the spiciness from the XO sauce (ok ok lar)….
P1000208
Another type of Chee Cheong Fun is the Steamed method with Bamboo Pith and Mixed Vegetables, much nicer here as compare to other places.
P1000209
Then you could try this, Steamed Rice Flour Noodle with Chinese Dough Fritters, it’s basically deep fried dough (oil fried ghost) wrap with chee cheong fun…. The combination of chee cheong fun is too starchy while the condiments are bland.
P1000213
After that, there is Steamed Shark Fin Dumpling in Superior Soup, the soup taste great and the dumpling, no doubt is tangy and quite a bouncy bite….
P1000231
The Roast Goose, not much of places offer roast goose, but it is very succulent and juicy, furthermore tasty. One of the best in town….
P1000207
The Stewed Pork Knuckle in Red Bean Curd, the pork knuckle is quite flavorful and tender, but some other places taste much better.
P1000218
Steamed Pork & Shrimp Dumpling (Siew Mai), quite big actually, maybe because of the price they offered (RM9), one of the most expensive siew mai in town or in Malaysia.
P1000227
Then Steamed Mixed Vegetable Dumpling, it is an average dish, nothing to shout about it.
P1000211
Deep Fried Aromatic Duck Spring Roll, quite a unique dish using duck meat into spring roll, must say that it’s crispy and one of the kind.
P1000214
And Radish Cake. The dish is oily and just a below average dish.
P1000217
Deep Fried Crap Fish Ball, a combination of crap meat and fish paste, making it a very unique and crunchy dish…yum
P1000220
Next, Crispy Bun Stuffed with Honey-Glazed BBQ Pork, basically, a char siew bun deep fried. It looks very delicious and indeed a nice dish to recommend to the patrons…
P1000222
Steamed Egg Yolk and Custard Bun, a very tasty dish and the bun is so soft and with a bite, warm egg yolk flowing out….MMMmmmMMmmm
P1000216
For desserts, there is the Chilled Mango Glutinous Rice Pancake, very unique and points to their chefs in making such creativity dish.
P1000225
If you prefer something else, try the Chilled Mango Pudding. Also a nice dish….
P1000233
Overall, food is okay here but be prepared to pay extra for their atmosphere and environment. The décor here is Oriental theme, can be seen in interior decorating throughout Imagine you dining in Oriental grandeur among ceramic tea pots, elegant flower wood carvings and Chinese lanterns in pink hue. However, we find that the restaurant was filled to capacity, resulting in really tight seating.
