Jarrod & Rawlins @ Desa Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur

Monday, June 29, 2009

P1000775
According to their website, the origins of this restaurant actually date back to a conversation in 2004 between two friends by the names of Jarrod Chek and Denis Rawlins. Whilst socializing, sharing a drink together one evening, the two began to speculate upon the idea of going into a joint venture business; being as they were already working in what seemed to be complimentary fields. One potential partner was working in the manufacture of meat products, and the other marketing imported fine wines. Food and wine, natural partners, and so shortly after this first speculative conversation, the company of Jarrod & Rawlins purveyors of fine food and wine, was formed and the first outlet in Desa Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur opened for business.
P1000765
In this branch, Jarrod & Rawlins presents several facets to their customers. They serve hearty breakfasts, lunchtime sandwich, other snacks and coffee, a cozy pub with good beer, wines, and pub food, a restaurant to take your dinner in the evening, and of course, not forgetting the delicatessen where one can find a good selection of meat, antipasti and wines.

Let’s start with a basic sandwich, Bacon Sandwich. Fresh grilled Bacon and use freshly baked wheat bread. It’s tangy and bacon is crispy. Yum yum…but it’s a bit salty.
P1000848
P1000849
Then if you craving for some heavy breakfast, do try the J&R Special. It comes with 2 organic eggs with your choice of cooking style, grilled tomatoes, extra sausages, extra bacon, mushrooms, Heinz Baked Bean and wheat bread toast. Also comes with coffee or tea and orange juice. The sausages are very good, sure patrons will enjoy it. The bacon is crispy and mushroom is average. But somehow La Bodega Breakfast set is bit better than them.

P1000774
If you can’t finish such a big portion, you can opt for J&R Fried Breakfast; it’s the same thing you are getting from J&R Special but with a single piece of sausage and bacon.
P1000851
Of course, patrons can always go for Ala-carte like ordering food from the cold storage area where they display all types of sausages, pork, bacon and cheeses. Like this dish below, there are grilled spare ribs (cut into pieces), pork & herbs sausages and pig in blanket. It also comes with garden salad. The grilled spare ribs is scrumptious and the sausages are also tangy.
P1000846
P1000853
The J&R’s Eggs Benedict “Indulgence”. It is a dish that consists of a half of an English Muffin, topped with ham or bacon, poached eggs, and hollandaise sauce. Tasty and yummy…..

Sushi Tei @Tropicana City Mall, Petaling Jaya

Thursday, June 25, 2009

My husband and I were driving around PJ area hunting for a new place to have our dinner. Now, ‘we’ decided to have Japanese cuisine since this pregnant lady (me) was advised to eat healthy and to eat more deep sea fish. The first thing that popped into my mind is Saba Shioyaki.
P1010041
Then, we remembered a new sushi restaurant at Tropicana City. It is situated at Ground Floor next to Kenny Rogers. We were lucky to be there early. Half an hour after we arrived, more and more people start arriving and forming a queue at the front of the restaurant. The interior of the restaurant is just like any other sushi restaurant. There are several tables hidden at the back of the ‘kitchen’ for patrons who preferred more privacy. The kitchen is located at the middle of the restaurant with see through half height windows. Well, if there is any hanky panky going on we can all witness it. Haha… We were seated at a side table where the sushi on the conveyor belt is out of reach.

For drinks, my husband ordered iced green tea (no surprise here) and I ordered an orange plus strawberry juice. The juice is RM5. It is not fresh juice. Tasted like orange and strawberry concentrate. It is quite thick and sweet. I had to ask for a glass of iced water to neutralize the taste. The green tea is also very concentrated. I think they added too much of green tea powder. It tasted quite bitter.
P1010044
Overall, I like the food here. The first dish is Agedashi Tofu. A must order for me. It is better than Umai-Ya. But, I like the one in Sushi Zanmai and Sushi Groove ones better. The sauce lacks certain oomph and the tofu is not soft enough.
P1010054
The second dish is Saba Shioyaki. I have to say that it is very worth ordering this dish. The portion is nearly twice bigger than other Sushi restaurant and just slightly more expensive, RM 13.80. Very worth it. Taste real good too. The fish skin is slightly crispy and the meat is juicy. Eat it with the soy sauce and ginger and it is simply yummy.
P1010056
Our third dish is Phoenix Roll. Two thumbs up here. I have never been a fan of Unagi but this is really good. It is a little bit pricey but the portion is big with lots of meaty stuffing. The rice is rolled with crispy prawn in the middle, a thick piece of unagi on top of the rice with a slice of avocado on top of the unagi. All these with some Japanese mayo squeezed in a zigzag pattern around the rice rolls. The prawn is crunchy, the unagi is juicy and the avocado has a buttery taste. Really a must try!
P1010062
Our fourth dish are the Salmon Skin Maki and Soft Shell Crab with Fish Floss rice rolls. They are separate items but served together. I didn’t really like the Salmon Skin Maki. The salmon skin is slightly overcooked. It is crispy and certain parts of the skin are very hard to chew on.
P1010063
The soft shell crab with fish floss has a spicy taste. The mayo has a chilly sauce taste. The rice rolls are huge with the crab legs protruding out of the rice rolls. We had to figure out the best way to eat the rice rolls without being messy. This dish is okay. A bit of a let down because the soft shell crab is no longer crispy. I think it would have been better if it retains its crunchy feeling. The sea weed wrap is also soft. It was difficult to get a clean bite out of the big rice roll because the crab is soft and the seaweed slightly soggy.
P1010064
P1010070
Besides that, you could try this Soft Shell Crab Sushi Roll. It's yummy and crispy.
P1010122
Then the California Hand Roll....Mmmmmm NICE!
P1010126
The Chawanmushi, is an egg custard dish that uses the seeds of ginkgo. Unlike many other custards, it is usually eaten as an appetizer. The custard consists of an egg mixture flavored with soy sauce, dashi, and mirin, with numerous ingredients such as shiitake mushrooms, kamaboko, and boiled shrimp placed into a tea-cup-like container. Their Chawanmushi is tasty and alright.
P1010132
The Yasai Miso Soup, it's a vegetable miso soup. It's average only.
P1010127
Then the Spicy Miso Ramen, the soup is spicy alright, tangy...........
P1010131
Chicken Katsu Udon. The Udon is served hot in a mildly flavoured broth, in its simplest form as kake udon, served in kakejiru made of dashi, soy sauce (shōyu), and mirin. And the Chicken Katsu is crispy.
P1010129
Lastly, the Chicken Katsu Curry Don. instead of serving Udon, they served it with rice and Japanese Curry. A wide variety of vegetables and meats are used to make Japanese curry. The basic vegetables are onions, carrots, and potatoes. YUM YUM...

Ming Cuisine @ Jalan 19/1, Petaling Jaya

Tuesday, June 23, 2009

P1000648
Late last year, Mouthwatering-Food did a post on Ming Cuisine and their dim sum. And review was pretty good actually. For this post, this is about their Chinese Dishes.

Briefly about the restaurant décor, newly furnish with furniture and white color as their main theme. It is a good place for good place for events especially for wedding dinner and able to cater about 50-60 tables. (Congrats to Mart and Vivian……… =)

Let’s start off with their latest promotion, Peking Duck or Peking Roast Duck is a famous duck dish from BeiJing that has been prepared since the imperial era, and is now considered one of China’s National Foods. The dish is prized for the thin, crispy skin, with authentic versions of the dish serving mostly the skin and little meat, sliced in front of the diners by the cook/staff. Ducks bred specially for the dish are slaughtered after 65 days and seasoned before being roasted in a closed or hung oven. The meat is often eaten with pancakes, spring onions, and hoisin sauce or sweet noodle sauce. Their Peking Duck is tasty and yum yum yum….
P1000653
As for the leftover duck meat, the chef will cook it based on your preference, like the picture below. It’s Duck Meat Fried in Black Pepper Style. Fried with onions and capsicum, it enhanced the duck flavor and meat is very tender too.
P1000662
Then the Fried Spare Ribs dipped in Salted Eggs. The taste is unique and creative. Furthermore, it’s tangy and recommend for other patrons to try it.
P1000654
House Specialty Homemade Tofu with vege cooked with mini Chinese Mushroom, using hoisin sauce and garnished with fried baby anchovies, one word, GOOD…
P1000657
Lastly, Stir-Fried Kai-Lan, plain and simply.

Ajisen Ramen @ 1 Utama, Petaling Jaya

Sunday, June 21, 2009

P1000712
Ajisen Ramen was found at Kumamoto, Japan in 1968. Currently Ajisen Ramen already has 400++ chains in worldwide. More than 120++ store chains is mainly found in the Far East including Japan and China, but has a few locations in North America, and couple of branches in Malaysia. The restaurant setup is pretty neat and relaxing where the lights are soft lighting and there are sections which have tatami mats.

To start off with the Pan Fried Gyoza, typically consist of a ground meat and/or vegetable filling wrapped into a thinly rolled piece of dough, which is then sealed by pressing the edges together or by crimping. The gyoza is crispy and serve good with soy-vinegar.
P1000743
Then The Unagi Roll, is the Japanese word for freshwater eels and wrapped with rice roll. It’s tasty but they put a bit too much of the mayonnaise.
P1000736
Chicken Teriyaki, using chicken breast meat and cook in teriyaki style which a cooking technique used in Japanese Cuisine in which the chicken is broiled or grilled in a sweet soy sauce marinade (tare in Japanese). It’s ok and tangy but not the best in town.
P1000735
As for the main dishes, the Spicy Chicken Chasiu Ramen. Ramen is a Japanese noodle dish that originated in China. It is served in a meat- or fish-based broth, often flavored with soy or miso, and uses toppings such as sliced pork/chicken, dried seaweed, green onions and even corn. As for this dish, they put spicy minced meat and it’s quite…sorry, is very hot…. Soup is nice and chicken chasiu is alright thought.
P1000738
And next is the Chasiu Corn Ramen, same thing but without the spicy minced meat and tops with lots of corn. Making the soup sweet and tangy.
P1000739
Gyoza Ramen, The Ramen is serve with milky soup base, 3 pieces of Gyoza, 1/2 piece of boil egg, bean sprouts & seaweed. In general, it’s alright.
P1000745
The Spicy Paikut Ramen, Paikut = Pork Ribs. With the usual ingredients and on top with that the spicy flake, the soup is great and paikut is alright, tender and flavorful.
P1000747
Garlic Fried Rice with Chicken Katsu, apparently they are only great with Ramen only. Their fried rice is quite bland and not that fragrance. The katsu is also average only.
P1000749
Hot Plate Ramen with Beef Teri, the beef is quite tender and nicely grilled and cook with the ramen on top of the hot plate. Nicely done and yum yum…
P1000751
Point to highlight here is that the service is quite slow; this area is very much needed to improve here.
