Home Made Fish Head Noodle Restaurant @ Dataran Sunway, Kota Damansara, Petaling Jaya

Monday, July 27, 2009

Here at Dataran Sunway, patrons sure find all sorts of food and there is one restaurant specialize in Fish Head Noodle. Fish Head Noodle, is a kind of noodle soup in which the main ingredients are rice vermicelli and fried fish head (separated into chunks). This dish is notable for the creamy, rich soup, which is typically made using a mixture of fish stock and milk.
P1010194
Before going into the main dish, let review their starter. The BBQ Pork’s Shoulder with Special Sauce. Served like satay skewers, the BBQ is marinated with their family secret ingredients & top up with special sauce. The pork was well marinated nonetheless; tasted very similar to fermented beancurd marination. Tender and juicy, this is quite good to snack on.
P1010215
Then the Pork Ribs Black Bean Sauce with Steam White Rice on Lotus Leave, besides the Fish Head Noodle, this is their must try dish. Overall, it is delicious and the gravy eat with white rice is very good. Yummy! But too bad, the portion is bit small.
P1010211
Stir Fried Hor Fun with Sliced Beef & Black Bean Sauce, a well stir fried dish indeed. It’s very tasty and again, the only downside is portion is too small.
P1010212
Now onto the Fish Head Noodle, they serve quite a variety of fish head meehoon for you to choose from, you can choose what fish you like, and you can choose deep fried or no deep fried. They have also fish paste noodles.
P1010217
It's served standard with four big chunks of deep fried fish head, lots of chopped tomatoes, and preserved vegetables (ham choi). The soup had a tinge of orange, different from the usual milky white that we were so accustomed to. This soup was thicker and skewed towards the sour side. If you have always like the light, sweet flavours of fish head soup, this might be too strong for your liking. As for the fish head, it had a very crunchy exterior but the meat was sweet, moist and springy; unlike most places which serves dry over fried fish slices.

Vietnam Kitchen @ Citrus Park OUG

Friday, July 24, 2009

Mama was throwing a party for her friends at home, so the rest of us decided to give her some space and ate out.

We arrived at a very empty Vietnam Kitchen at Citrus Park, Plaza OUG. Being quite familiar with the menu and in no mood to go for their set menus, we decided to order ala carte.

First dish out of the kitchen was the Chicken Chop Rice. Served on a big heavy plate, the chicken was extremely tender and went well with the accompanying sauce, however the taste was lacking and tasted rather bland.

Solution: Pour the sauce over it....

Then came my Fried Rice. My second fried rice meal of the day, after having Pineapple
Fried rice for lunch. What can I say, I love fried rice. Accompanied by a set of chicken wings, the fried rice was very fragrant and was also an 8/10 taste-wise. The chicken wings were a let-down as they were tasteless although I did enjoy the crispiness of the skin. Where do they get their chicken from anyw
ay?? The sambal that came with it was very spicy and would be a hit among chilli lovers. Come to think of it, the portion is rather small and is quite a sum to pay for RM10.90++, don't you think?

Finally, the Pork Chop Rice was whizzed out of the kitchen. Looking pretty similar to the Chicken chop, I found it rather difficult to distinguish which was which, by just looking at them. However, the pork chop was lean, tender and well-marinated. Although a bit dry, there was no real need to add in the accompanying sauce.

The overall service in the restaurant was ok as the waiters were attentive but the bartender and chefs took quite a while to prepare our food and beverages. Quite long, considering there were only about 3 occupied tables at that time.

Sang Har Mee @ Greenview SS2

My uncle recently felt generous and decided to buy the whole family dinner. He took us to GreenView Restaurant (near Rothmans roundabout) and had a feast. Duck, pork, noodles, soup, fish were all served but the highlight of the night was the 'Sang Har Mee' aka 'Big Prawn Noodles.' Green View has always been known for this dish, but it was the sheer size of the serving that surprised me.

You can tell its a Godzilla-portion by comparing to the soy-sauce bottle at the top right. The prawns were as big as a chicken drumstick.

It didn't disappoint and lived up to being the 'signboard' dish of Greenview.

Yummy....

Daorae Korean BBQ @ Desa Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur

Tuesday, July 14, 2009

This is the Korean restaurant where Korean goes to when they want Korean food. The restaurant is located in Desa Sri Hartamas, they occupied the 1st & 2nd floor & ground floor is a Korean mini market. Daorae serves authentic and delicious barbeque dishes. The decoration in Daorae is simple yet gives you the authentic feeling. Wooden chairs and tables are used to mimic the good old days of Korea. Patrons can choose to sit at the raised platform at one part of the restaurant and this really adds to the ambiance of a real Korean dining experience.
P1010072
When you go in, most likely you are talking to the Nepalese waiters (fancy a Korean restaurant with Korean owner, captain, cashier and of course, chefs but having Nepalese waiters. Mind you though, these hard working waiters actually speak Korean!). Not all of them speak good English, but the numbered and pictorial menu assures that you get the orders through.

To the BBQ, all meats are raw and not marinated. Like the Sam Kyub Sal (RM27) is thin slices of pork belly which by itself doesn't have much taste as its not marinated so you will need to dip it in the salt sauce. However, it was certainly juicy and tender as you can see from the picture.
P1010093
Daeji Galbi (pork ribs) dish of the sweet and spicy variation. The sweet variation is marinated in a sauce made from fruit juice, rice wine, soy sauce, sesame oil and sugar while the spicy variation uses house spicy marinate sauce. It is succulent in taste, crisply grilled to perfection with slightly charred around the edges.

Korean meals is usually served with Ban-Chan, free-of-charge Korean traditional side dishes that may be refilled. Banchan refers to small side-dishes served along with cooked rice in Korean Cuisine. The most famous banchan is kimchi. Banchan are served in small portions, meant to be finished at each meal. They can be replenished during the meal as they are finished.
P1010098
Then the Kimchi-jeon (Kimchi Pancake), it’s a spicy, savory pancake comprising of kimchi tossed in light butter, and pan fried to perfection. Quite tasty, truly nice….
P1010094
Pa-jeon (Seafood Pancake), it’s a delicate pancake comprising of fresh seafood in batter topped with spring onion. It’s also nice and delightful.
P1010100
Kimchi-jeon-gol (Kimchi Iron Pot), this dish is a spicy combination of pork, kimchi, tofu and Korean noodles slimmered in a rich kimchi soup served in a cast iron pot. It’s so hot and spicy. Very interesting actually.
P1010089
Jab-chae (Fried Glass Noodle), a Korean glass noodle. The chef pan fried it with thin slices of marinated pork and assorted seasoned vegetables in a sesame oil sauce. The noodle is quite good and tasty. Yum
P1010092
Generally, the service is excellent and you just have to sit and wait for the food to be done. Furthermore, the whole grilling and wrapping experience thingy is a nice experience though.

Asian Food House Restaurant @ Damansara Utama (Uptown), Petaling Jaya

Sunday, July 12, 2009

This particular restaurant located in Uptown is quite hard to notice it if you’re not familiar with the area. As compare to other restaurant, you might opt for other well-known restaurants like the Village Park, Umai-Ya and many more…. But don’t judge the book by its cover; you might get some couple of surprises here.
P1010015
Mainly this restaurant specialized in Taiwanese Cuisine and Bubble Tea, it is often associated with influences from mid to southern provinces of China, most notably from the province of Fujian (Hokkien), but influences from all of China can easily be found. A notable Japanese influence exists due to the period when Taiwan was under Japanese rule. Traditional Chinese food to be found in Taiwan, alongside Fujian and Hakka-style as well as native Taiwanese dishes, includes dishes from Guangdong, Jiangxi, Chaoshan, Shanghai, Hunan, Sichuan and Beijing. Also, serves Japanese, Korean and Thai dishes.

Firstly, they have a vast variety of Bubble Teas, is a tea beverage containing tapioca balls. The literal translation from Chinese is pearl milk tea. The word "bubble" refers to "bubbling", the process by which certain types of bubble tea are made, and not the actual tapioca balls (mixture of tapioca and carrageenan powder). The balls are often called boba or "pearls." Drinks with large pearls are consumed along with the beverage through wide straws; while drinks with small pearls are consumed through normal straws. For the below, there is the Honeydew Milk Tea (Regular Size and Large Size). It’s delightful, sweet and refreshing.
P1010025
Then the following below is Honey Green Tea (it’s nice), Blueberry Milk Tea (Also nice and refreshing) and the Mother of Pearl (Original Taste).
P1010026
The Ginger Honey (Hot Tea), it’s good for cold and throat.
P1010034
For the main course, you should try their Taiwanese Style Pork Spare Ribs Noodle. Once served, you can strongly smell the pork scent coming out from the dish. The portion is just nice and they provide quite an amount of pork which is very tender and juicy. And most of all, the soup is marvelous and stunning.
P1010031
If you don’t feel like eating noodle, you can also opt for rice. The Taiwanese Style Pork Spare Ribs with rice. The soup/gravy compliment quite well with rice. Very nice!!!
P1010032
The Taiwanese Fried Pork Chop Noodle Soup, the noodle is average and the soup is clear (not much of taste actually, quite bland). However, the Fried Pork Chop is very crispy and tangy. So good so nice.
P1010033
Overall, the place is cozy and service is good. And most of all, the price is not very high.

Umai-Ya Japanese Restaurant @ Damansara Utama (Uptown), Petaling Jaya

Saturday, July 11, 2009

P1000914
This very cozy and nice Umai-Ya Japanese Restaurant is hidden in Damansara Utama, same row with HSBC. They serve very good buffet on weekends at about RM48+ per head. Umai-Ya is yet another restaurant which offers a selective Japanese cuisine. Unlike any other buffets, Umai-Ya’s style of buffet is somewhat different compare to the likes of Shogun, Tenji, Jogoya and etc. Instead of you going to counters picking the food you planned to devour, all you’ve got to do is to look at the menu and select what you want as well as the quantity. Then, pass the menu (or paper) back to waiter for ordering. Besides, Umai-Ya offers nothing but Japanese food.

They were running some buffet promotion on the weekends (for lunch only). The deal is all you can eat and drink and you only have to pay RM48++. As usual, you can order bottomless ocha (a.k.a. green tea) and besides ocha, you can opt for Coke or Tiger beer. Yes, Unlimited Tiger beer!

Let’s start with the Salmon Sashimi (2 pcs), freshness is essential when it comes to eating sashimi, and every piece was succulently fresh.
P1000903
Unagi Sushi, the Unaki is tasty but the size (thickness) is a little bit too thin.
P1000910
Talking about Unagi Sushi, the below is the Unagi Hand Roll. It’s crispy and taste quite good actually. Yum!
P1000904
Then the Saba Shioyaki or grilled mackerel, nicely deep fried the fish instead of doing a slow grill. Here, they grilled the fish to a perfection. The flesh is thoroughly cooked yet retains the juiciness from the fat. The skin of the fish is intact, brown to a crisp yet not burnt. When doused with a squeeze of lemon to cut the oiliness and eaten with a dollop of grated daikon………MMMmmmmMmmm
P1000901
Agedashi Tofu, is a Japanese way to serve hot tofu. Silken (kinugoshi) firm tofu, cut into cubes, is lightly dusted with potato starch or cornstarch and then deep fried until golden brown. It's then served in a hot tentsuyu broth made of dashi, mirin, and sho-yu (Japanese soy sauce), and topped with finely chopped negi (a type of spring onion) or grated daikon. Here is average (so so saja)…
P1000906
Dragon Maki, consists of salmon, Ebi Tempura Roll with Eel and avocado on top. Tempura prawn wrapped in sushi rice with unagi and slices of avocado, each bite was made even more sensational topped with the compulsory wasabi. This was rather pricey though but very worth it.
P1000909
Next, the Soft Shell Crab Maki, with fried soft shell crab roll with avocado and cucumber. The crab is crunchy and tasty and it taste so so good.
P1000902
Another Maki, the California Cheese Maki. It’s a crabstick, cucumber roll with cheese and eel on top. Eel is nice grilled and juicy on top.
P1000908
As for dessert, the Chocolate Ice Cream, very creamy and chocolaty tasty. Nice.
P1000911
As for the Wasabi Ice Cream top with Red Bean, it’s also tasty and refreshing after meal.
P1000913
Overall, the service here is par as they are lack of staff. But still worth going for a try.

Pho Hoa @ The Curve, Petaling Jaya

Wednesday, July 8, 2009

P1000927
Pho Hoa is a new chain restaurant in Malaysia and is the largest Vietnamese restaurant chain in North America with locations in almost every city where Asians densely populate.

For this particular branch, it hidden in the ground floor of the Asian courtyard area in the Curve (behind Baskin Robbins and Thai Express). Let starts with the appetizers, the Cha Gio (Fried Spring Rolls). Their spring roll is quite tasty with minced chicken meat and vegetable. Every bite is so crunchy and delightful.
P1000940
And the Vietnam Lemon Grass Chicken, the chef wrapped around the chicken meat onto lemon grass and home-style deep fried. Nice!
P1000938
Next, the Com Ga Nuong Cha Gio (Grilled Chicken & Fried Roll) serves with rice. The grilled chicken is nicely marinated and grilled perfectly, very tender and juicy. And of course, the fried roll is yummy (as mentioned above).
P1000933
The Tom Yam Seafood Noodle, really yummy, the right level of spiciness with heaps of seafood and smooth noodle strands, you should try it…
P1000939
If this is your first time enjoying Pho or if you simply prefer a tender, lean cut of beef, this is the right choice. The steak or brisket will be slightly cooked by the boiling broth to the perfect "medium" by the time the order reaches your table. Pho Hoa Restaurant features naturally flavored, low-calorie, delicious soups with the choicest slices of brisket, flank, eye round steak and etc. Each bowl of soup is accompanied with fresh coriander leaves, bean sprouts, hot peppers and lemon wedges, to give the customers a complete, nutritious and well-balanced meal. It’s so good, soup is sweet, meats are so tender and juicy….definitely a must order.
P1000934
Then if you not up to beef, you can always opt for chicken meat. Also tasty and delicious.
P1000936
Overall, the place is comfortable but simple casual ambience with friendly service, decent range of rice and noodle dishes on the menu for reasonable prices.
