Roasted Turkey @ Victoria Station

Saturday, December 26, 2009

P1020523
Turkeys are traditionally eaten as the main course of Christmas feasts in much of the world (stuffed turkey), as well as Thanksgiving in the United States and Canada, though this tradition has its origins in modern times, rather than colonial as is often supposed. Before the 20th century, pork ribs were the most common food on the holiday, as the animals were usually slaughtered in November. Turkeys were once so abundant in the wild that they were eaten throughout the year, the food considered commonplace, whereas pork ribs were rarely available outside of the Thanksgiving-New Year season. It has also displaced, to a certain extent, the traditional Christmas roast goose or beef of the United Kingdom and Europe. While eating turkey was once mainly restricted to special occasions such as these, turkey is now eaten year-round and forms a regular part of many diets
P1020563
Turkeys are usually baked or roasted in an oven for several hours, often while the cook prepares the remainder of the meal. Here, the Victoria Station’s turkey is brined before roasting to enhance flavor and moisture content. This is necessary because the dark meat requires a higher temperature to denature all of the myoglobin pigment than the white meat (very low in myoglobin), so that fully cooking the dark meat tends to dry out the breast. Brining makes it possible to fully cook the dark meat without drying the breast meat. Turkeys are sometimes decorated with turkey frills prior to serving.
P1020566
Victoria Station package turkey comes with chickens sausages, parsley potatoes, fresh garden salad, roast sauce, cranberry sauce and French dressing. The turkey is tasty and roasted quite well (roasted in traditional way). Meat is tender and not dry. Overall is good.

Pizza San Francisco Restaurant @ Jalan Pelapik, Bukit Jelutong, Shah Alam

Wednesday, December 9, 2009

IMG_0057
Pizza San Francisco is a chain restaurant and they have about 4 branches around Klang Valley as todate. For this post, this restaurant is located in Bukit Jelutong, Shah Alam which is the newest one. What's so eye catching about this place is that they have this huge banner that they put up every month. Showing off their offer of the month. Like maybe Fish and Chips for only RM8.90 or etc. As for this month, they are offering Beef Steak at RM12.90 only.
IMG_0061
Talking about their steak, they are using local beef. They grilled the beef in Black pepper sauce which is alright. Texture wise is tender but not that great if you compare with Australian Beef. Taste wise is quite average, it’s all about black pepper. It has totally covered the origin taste of the beef.

Next, the Chicken Finger for starter course. Using chicken breast, cover with egg and bread crumbs and then deep fried. It’s crunchy and taste ok with tartar sauce.
IMG_0059
Linguini Salmon, tops with cream sauce and herbs. The taste is good but not that great yet. Portion wise is small. And salmon is not that fresh.
IMG_0063
Carbonara, spaghetti tops with cream sauce comes with mushrooms, olives and chicken salami. The dish is about the same as the above Linguini Salmon. Nothing to comment further.
IMG_0062
Overall, here they serve vast variety of steaks to pizza to pasta. For patrons that looking for some affordable western Italian food, then you should come and try it. That’s all.

The Ship @ Damansara Utama (Uptown), Petaling Jaya

Saturday, June 13, 2009

Decades ago, young restauranteurs like Mr. Foo Hee Hoon and Foo Hee Loon who believed that good food alwayscrosses cultures and prejudices, and appeals to discerning consumers. Mr. Foo Hee Hoon, Mr. Foo Hee Loon and other partners almost single-handedly took on the formidable challengeto start The Ship restaurant (The Ship), opening at Jalan Sultan Ismail what was later to become one of the many more outlets all over Malaysia. Although it wasn't exactly smooth sailing all the way, there was never a doubt that its captain at the helm was steadily steering it towards sure success.
P1040293
The Ship, with the reputation of serving The Best Steak in Town, was well served under a unique decorative setting. The unique exterior of their restaurants resemble an almost life-size hull of a ship, and on stepping inside one will be impressed with the timely recreated likeness of a sea-going vessel. All captains and crews are dress in maritime uniform.
P1040272
Before getting to their steak, let’s start with the starter, Garlic Bread. It’s crunchy and nicely toast….
P1040279
Then the Mushroom Soup, it’s creamy and full slices of button mushrooms..tasty actually but downsized is a bit salty.
P1040280
To the main course, The Russian Chicken, the chef used chicken fillet and grilled, garnished with mushroom and red wine sauce, served with French fries and vegetables. It’s just a so so (average) dish.. The sauce is not that great to be frank.
P1040282
Next, the Black Mushroom Steak. The chef nicely grilled the fillet steak and garnished with black mushroom and gravy sauce and served with French fries and vegetables. Firstly, the sauce is bland and mushroom is bit hard. Not that appetizing……….
P1040287
The Black Pepper Steak, this is their specialty dish. Grilled fillet steak garnished with selected black pepper sauce, served with French fries and vegetables. Indeed, this dish is tangy and claimed by them. Steak is tender and juicy. Nice.
P1040286
Then the Charbroiled BBQ Spare Rib, patrons able to choose with or without chili. Bone-in Rib steak, marinated until bone and served with vegetables, corn on cob, baked potato and a bowl of salad. Let’s talk about the pros about this dish, yes, the dish is deliciously marinated and love the gravy/sauce, END. Subsequently the cons about this dish, the meat is tender but only on the top part. On the bottom part (rib), the meat is bloody raw (at first, didn’t realize until cut into the rib and the place was quite dark)…just look at the picture below, the bottom area; clearly you can see that the meat is raw. Oh, by the way, ordered medium well done for the rib. Then call the waiter and complained, the waiter was friendly and returned to kitchen to re-BBQ it.
P1040277
P1040284
Round 2, the dish returned to patron and the moment the knife cut into the rib area, surprise! It’s still Bloody raw! Called the Floor Captain, and believe it or not, he said “oh it’s normal to be raw especially near the bone area, because it’s quite hard to cook it.” Wow! Unbelievable, are you saying that patrons should expect this particular dish to be raw even thought patrons asking for well done or medium cook? Stupid explanation. Please think before you reply your customer!

Soon, the Manager of the restaurant came by and… found out what happened… apologized and attempt to re-BBQ it again but patron refused due to no appetite already. Because of that, the restaurant gave patrons free dessert. The dessert is oklar, raspberry with pudding and cream on top with a dried preserved cherry.

Sunday, May 24, 2009

P1000283
This is the second post about Alexis Bistro and this time is about their breakfast set. Basically, patrons can choose between 2 types of breakfast sets, the Hearty breakfast set or the Wellness breakfast set. For the wellness set, basically they serve a healthy breakfast like bircher muesli with wheat germ & sunflower seeds, with fresh fruits with honey yogurt and Aesop herbal tea. Too bad, this round didn’t manage to try it but try doing it next time.

As for the Hearty set, patrons get to choose coffee/tea from their drink menu and furthermore, the set comes with a cup of freshly squeezed fruit juice.
P1000290
P1000291
This particular set serves with 2 fresh organic eggs with your choice of style (fried, scrambled, poached and sunny side), turkey ham or turkey sausages, baked beans, sautéed mushrooms, grilled tomato & toast. Of course, you can opt to add hash brown for an additional RM5.
P1000295
P1000296
Mostly the eggs are delightful, and then the turkey ham is quite nice and tangy, same comments about the turkey sausages (Yummy). Baked beans, the usual self, and no comment. Sautéed mushrooms are tasty and grilled tomato is over baked and juicy. Lastly the hash brown is crunchy and lip-smacking.
P1000298
P1000297
Generally, the breakfast set is reasonable priced and tasty. Definitely many patrons can enjoy their meals as well as the ambiance here.

Gaucho Grill @ Chulan Square, Jalan Raja Chulan

Saturday, May 9, 2009

P1040065
There are two things Argentineans are proud of – their football players and their succulent beef. It is believe that many steak lovers love this place. Gaucho Grill, The restaurant at the Golden Triangle along Jalan Raja Chulan in Kuala Lumpur is hard to miss with its big black life- size dummy of a cow at the entrance. Their chef, Chef Kamaruddin explained that Argentina is actually the 2nd largest consumer of beef in the world, just after US. And vegetable is not exactly popular; the South Americans love their meat. Gaucho Grill imports all their meat from herds raised by gauchos (cowboys) of Argentina.
P1040089
The décor is a casual ambience with lots of timber and it is easy to settle into. Think of it as a surrogate ranch with a charcoal grill for a shrine. There’s Latin flavored music so deep in the background that you might not even notice it. Other than that, a complementing the steaks are a salad bar (should try the eggplants, yummy) and free flow of onion soup (oklar).
P1040085
P1040086
P1040088
Firstly, Tapas, sautéed prawns with garlic, chili, parsley and dress up with olive oil, crispy almond calamari with lemon, then the sautéed mussel with basil, garlic & tomato……MMMmmmmmMMm…all are so tasty…
P1040093
For kids’ meal, they always recommend the Chicken Nugget and Chips, and looking at the picture, you must be wondering this nugget is so BIG and taste wise is ok oklar…to kids, it’s appetizing.
P1040094
Next, Gamberoni, a pasta dish, linguine aglio alio garnished with chili flakes and topped with prawns & mussel and grill king prawn. Nice actually…………
P1040095
After that, Roasted Chicken Breast, served with swiss mushroom, white mushroom sauce & canelinni beans salad. Taste wise, it’s nice but the chicken meat is very dry and gives patron a difficult time to swallow it. Maybe, they are not good with chicken…
P1040097
Pescado, US Cod Grilled, lemon paprika rubbed, and served asparagus & scallop. The cod fish is amazing, texture and taste are both equally impression.
P1040098
The main event, Grilled Wagyu Rib-Eye (RM110++), served with roasted potato, aragula & cherry tomato and rosemary butter drop on top of the Rib-Eye. The texture is very tender, and every bite size is juicy and tangy. No doubt they are good with their steak.
P1040096
Lastly, Surf and Turf, grilled striploin with pepper gravy and comes with a half lobster with mushroom cream sauce on melted cheese, jacket potato, tossed enoki and edarmame beans. The striploin is marvelous, succulent, moist and delicious. Then the lobster is also taste great. Must try….
P1040099
Overall, a nice ambiance with nice steaks. So don’t wait and go pay a visit, however, quite a pricey place (maybe due to the place is located in the Golden triangle).

Monday, May 4, 2009

Just recently, Passions Magazine organized an enchanted evening ball held in the Palace of the Golden Horses. It’s tagged as one of the Asia's Most Classical Hotel and a world-class award winning luxury hotel located within MINES Resort City and just 20 minutes away from the city centre and 35 minute drive from KLIA. P1040026
No doubt that having the ball in this enchanting palatial hotel, they offer the best from their chef’s gastronomic array of cuisines from local fare to international delights that will surely satisfy patrons’ culinary cravings.

First, free flow of the finest champagne. Champagne is a sparkling wine produced by inducing the in-bottle secondary fermentation of the wine to effect carbonation. It is produced exclusively within the Champagne region of France, from which it takes its name.
P1040031
Next, Prawns and Scallop, the chef used Cameli Bean, Rocket Lettuce & Black Olive Vinaigrette…also comes with an oven baked garlic bread. The dish is delicious, the prawns are fresh, and scallop is nicely done.
P1040041
Then the Wild Mushroom Soup, with Bread and Butter. They use fresh mushroom to make this soup from step 1, making it so creamy and tangy.
P1040045
Before proceeding to the main course, they served Lime Sherbet (refreshing and coolly), to clear the after taste from the mushroom soup. Sherbet is a traditional cold drink prepared with rose hips, cornelian cherries, rose or licorice and a variety of spices. Sherbet is a popular drink in the Middle East and Indian subcontinent.
P1040046
To the main course, the Salmon & Chicken Combo, using a combination of oven baked salmon fillet and medallion of chicken with fennel stew. It tasted very good and texture is satisfactorily. The dish is also served with roasted baby potatoes, wild mushroom ragout, fresh field greens and garnished with tomato-aged balsamic sauce. Overall, the main course is very flavorful and tangy. Marvelous!
