Sri Paandi (PJ) Restaurant @ Jalan 11 PJ

Banana leaf rice is a typical dish in South Indian cuisine, and white rice is served on a banana leaf with assortment of vegetables, curry/fried meat or fish, pickles and papadum. It is traditionally eaten with hand. The banana leaf is used as it is believed that the hot rice will release the coating on the banana leaf, which assists in digestion. So if you want to eat a nice banana leaf in PJ, Sri Panndi would be the place to you for the fantastic and satisfying meal. Located near Universiti Hospital (UH) or Jalan Universiti, you must be careful, there are 2 Restaurants having the same name ‘Sri Paandi’. The authentic/genuine Sri Panndi is occupying at the corner shoplot. Ambiance wise, nothing special actually, just like a typical Indian/mamak restaurant style. Luckily, they do have air-cons.

To get down to business, once seated, you will be amazed by the sheer speed and agility of each and every waiter. They have a well practiced rhythm here that can hypnotize you if you watch the servers for too long. Layout leaf, plop on rice, plop on vegetables, dish out chutney, lava on curry, place papadum on top pile - pour water. Your meal is served.
Rice here is served with the usual three vegetable dishes and even this is good enough for you to enjoy the full flavors of the meal. There’s a generous spoonful of spinach, potatoes stewed in turmeric and cucumbers fragrant with cumin. Then you have all the curries and dhal poured on top. For those who want to have extra dishes like chicken, fish or mutton, you can order it separately and eat with the Banana Leaf Rice.
The chicken and fish, deep fried to golden, heart-stopping perfection, yet still managing to retain its tenderness and flavor. As for their mutton, which is cooked dry style, it’s was very flavorful, and just spicy enough.
On the whole, food is great and about this place is that the number of waiters they hire to stand around. There are certainly a lot of them, and apparently once customers seated, they come and swarm all over the customers to attend the customers’ needs.
